Moving an EC2 instance from one zone, region or VPC is thought to be the very big deal for the administrators. But seriously it is not at all a big deal for the administrators, it very easier to move the VM from one location to another location. Also, the instance need not be stopped while moving from one location to another location. If it is a production system you may worry about moving a data and lot of other technical configuration. Now AWS provides the option to move the instance from one place to another totally like a clone. The new VM will have all the data of the existing VM. You can take the clone of the system at running state too.

Let see how it can be done, changing the instance from one location to another location such as region, zone, and VPC. Each region will have three zones such as 2a,2b,2c. Step 1: Create an AMI

  • Right Click the instance at the running state and then in Image –> Create Image

Here is an AWS CLI script:

@echo off

set /p id=Instance Id:

set /p name=AMI name:

“C:\Program Files\Amazon\AWSCLI\aws.exe” ec2 create-image –instance-id %id% –name %name%

Now the AMI is created and it will be available in that location where currently the instance is running.

Step 2: Launch created AMI in the desired Availability Zone / VPC / AWS Region

  • If you want to move the AMI from one location to another location then proceed with right click the AMI and copy the AMI.

  • Select a destination region and a new name for your AMI. Switch to your destination region and go to the next section.

  • After moving the Instance AMI from one location to another location, then click on the AMI and starting launching in that location.

  • AMI is like an iso for a VM ware, now you can select the required VPC, Subnet, adding new security groups, tags, and storage.

Now the VM from one location is moved to another location, you have to notice that you need to turn off the server while moving the servers from one location to another VPC, Availability Zones and etc.
